Angus Gold is an area of work within the Community Learning & Development Service, within Angus Council's Department of Education.
It is all about working with the 50plus age group across all of Angus by encouraging people to think about issues that are important to them and to find ways in which they can gain the necessary skills and confidence - and opportunities - to address these issues. This might be by learning something new that enables an individual to achieve goals that are important and relevant to them, or by participating in activities or groups that are worthwhile and rewarding, or by gaining access to information that is useful.
Angus Gold was originally created through external funding in 2005, from the then Scottish Executive. Since 2008 Angus Gold has been part of the core provision within the CLD Service where it remains today.
Angus Gold was set up to look at ways in which the 50plus age group could be encouraged to become more involved and included in society through gaining the necessary skills and confidence to do so. One of the main issues concerning this age group was how to access suitable and affordable opportunities to learn about new information technology - primarily how to use computers. Existing research on this area said that people who could not use computers often felt left out of the modern world. Sometimes people said this lack of computer knowledge made them feel stupid and they worried about how they would manage to learn something so new and different.
This is why much of the initial work undertaken by Angus Gold focused on how best to deliver basic computer training to older people and how to involve people who were most at risk of missing out on learning this new skill.
All this computer training opened up discussions with people about what they might want to do next given that they had achieved a new skill and often a sense of fulfillment and new-found enthusiasm. This led to the development of forum groups (now seven in number, spread throughout Angus). For more detail about forum groups follow this link Angus Gold Forums.
A focus on health issues is also a significant area of activity in Angus Gold – again for more detail on health and wellbeing follow this link Health And Wellbeing.
Activities, groups, action and involvement in many different aspects of society have been developed and continue to be developed by Angus Gold. Learners and participants in Angus Gold activities range from aged 50 to 95 years. Whether it is learning about computers, health and wellbeing work, being involved in the Gold Forums, seated exercise classes, or drama, the participants themselves have contributed to every aspect of the development of the work.
