Minute of meeting held on
Tuesday 31 January 2012
At 2.00pm in Bruce House, Arbroath
Present: Mary Dow, David Todd (Brechin), Betty Edwards, Janet Maynard (Arbroath), Betty Irvine, Margaret Brown, Dot Brankin (Carnoustie), Alastair Cochrane-Dyet (Kirriemuir), Betty Hosie (Forfar), Maggie Sherrit (SCLDW), Leisa Thomson (student), Barbara Stewart (CLDW)
Apologies: Grace Murray (Forfar).
1 Welcome to everyone.
2 Minute of last meeting approved by Betty Irvine and seconded by David Todd.
3 Matters Arising: The Constitution had been ‘tidied up’ to ensure consistency of layout, etc and was duly signed by the Chairperson and a witness. Copies of the unsigned Constitution have been e-mailed to all Forum support staff, as agreed. Alastair asked for and was given an explanation as to what the entitlement card is. Betty Irvine asked whether the Scottish Older Persons Assembly film is now accessible and was told that, sadly, none of the staff has been successful in accessing it on the available equipment.
4 Angus Gold Conference: Mary’s initial informal contact with Asda staff was very positive and she is now awaiting a reply to her formal request for refreshments and a buffet. The bus company has confirmed that they are going to provide transport but we need to confirm, nearer the time, the numbers and locations for pick-up. In discussion it was agreed that two coaches would be ideal. It was also agreed to have a central theme for the conference around ‘learning and health’; that each of the Forums, as in previous years, would provide display boards indicating what they had been up to over the last year and what they have got out of it; that the U3A groups in Arbroath and Forfar (both of which were represented at the Network meeting) be invited to provide a display of their activities.
5 Entitlement Card: Barbara reported that since the last Network meeting she has written out to all the businesses and service providers currently listed on the Angus Gold website and has received some replies. A ‘reply by’ date was given, along with notice that businesses and service providers not replying by that date would be removed from the website. The website will be updated accordingly. Work is continuing on a ‘pack’ for Forum members to recruit new businesses and service providers across Angus.
6 Forum Feedback: Carnoustie: a representative from the Questers Group, which also meets in the Panmure Centre, visited the Forum to tell them about recent changes and plans for a renewed Questers Group and to recruit new members.
Brechin: Kate Wood, from polypharmacy, gave a very interesting talk, which seemed to raise more questions than answers. However Kate will come back to the Forum to address the presently unanswered questions. Forum members visited Breadalbine Community Campus in order to better inform the input to the planning of the proposed Brechin Community Campus. Contact has been made with Angus Access Panel to invite a representative to a future meeting to discuss the lack of lowered pavements, etc in Brechin. It was proposed to invite a representative from the local GP practice regarding their patient care. A further meeting with the bus company representatives and Angus Council’s Transport Officer is to be held in at 2.00pm, in the Damacre Centre, on Thursday 23 February. Mary invited other Forum’s members to attend in order to raise their issues directly with the bus company representatives and the Transport Officer.
Forfar: At the December meeting Betty Hosie gave feedback she had received regarding the results of Angus Council’s budget consultation focus group in Forfar. This generated much discussion about the cost of funerals and the placement of cemeteries. At their January meeting members caught up on their festive activity news and discussed information in various handouts, including changes to the issue of ‘blue badges’.
Kirriemuir: Helen Reid, Assistant Principal Community Learning & Development Officer, attended the December meeting to explain why the CLDS had decided to withdraw the mini buses from Kirriemuir and Carnoustie and discuss possible alternatives. There was no meeting in January.
Arbroath: Although unable to view the Scottish Older Persons’ Assembly film footage Forum members had a good discussion about the topics raised in the report of the event. As there were so many issues for discussion this will be continued at a future meeting and a speaker will be invited to cover some of the issues raised. Forum members are embarking on an intergenerational games project (sharing games which both groups enjoy/ed) with pupils from Hayshead Primary School and have had one meeting so far. Jean, a Forum member is also involved with a group addressing issues around accessability and she asked Forum members to tell her about any difficulties they encounter in accessing local buildings, etc.
AOCB: Betty Hosie distributed information sheets regarding equity release and asked Forum members who are interested to raise the issue for discussion in their local Forums.
Date of next meeting: Tuesday 3 April, at 2.00pm, in Bruce House.
