Montrose Gold Forum Meeting Present: Ivy Turnbull, Doris Reimer, June Ruxton, Ness Vann, Betty Kerr, Jeann Wallace, Ann White, Elizabeth Walker, Frances Stott, Kate Wood (NHS Tayside), Rachel McCullough (Dundee Univeristy), Julie-Anne Kinnear (CLD Service) Apologies: Margaret Newey Polypharmacy: Kate Wood gave a most informative talk about “polypharmacy” – which simply means “lots of medicines”. She explained that there is a pilot project in Tayside to look at the benefits of bringing together an older patient, their GP, the GP practice pharmacist and the “medicine for the elderly” consultant to have a more in-depth and joined-up look at what medicines the patient is prescribed. There was a general discussion about the issue of having lots of medicines that can sometimes be unnecessary or have disturbing side-effects when mixed – the group felt that the service being piloted would be welcomed and understood that there would be associated costs involved in meetings that involved so many professionals. However, they hoped that the results of the study would show whether or not there would be a saving in the longer term by people having their medicine regime better managed to better effect and with less waste of unnecessary medicine. Kate agreed to re-visit the group when the results of the study were known. She thanked the group for their input which would help inform the overall study. Diamond Jubilee: Julie-Anne has received a general letter inviting groups to out themselves forward to participate in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebration being held at Glamis Castle on Sunday 20th May. Group members are keen to attend but would need more detail about input from them is required and what transport arrangements are etc. Dates for your diaries: Julie-Anne had information about a few forthcoming events which she shared with the group. Julie-Anne agreed to forward the names of the members who wanted to go to the events.
