Sex - The Last Taboo

When many older people were growing up, attitudes towards sexuality and sex were much more rigid than they are today. Often sex was not discussed, even between husband and wife. A perception still persists among some young people - and more significantly among some older people - that sex is only for the young and beautiful. They think it is inappropriate for older people to show an interest or be actively involved in the sensual side of loving.
This is a myth that needs to be dispelled immediately. But it can only be done if we have a much more positive and open attitude to sexual health and well being - with respect for ourselves and others as the cornerstone of this philosophy.
Unfortunately even amongst older people in today's society there are powerful pressures to be 'a couple'. And that pressure is even greater for those who are single after a long partnership. It is not always easy to begin again and unhelpful myths about sexuality and older people mean that sources of help for older people are limited - especially for those with health problems or those in a caring situation. Even professional people such as your GP or your care staff may have difficulty understanding or addressing your, your partner's or any potential partner's sexual health needs.
Luckily with sex it is never too late. Being sexual is part of what makes us human, a key part of who we are. Sex at any age is such an important part of a mature and loving relationship that no age or disability barriers to sex and loving should be tolerated. Sex brings consenting partners pleasure, intimacy, personal fulfilment and most importantly fun. It also has important health benefits both physically and emotionally. And, if practiced safely, sexual activity should enhance and complement a healthy approach to life. Any barriers to healthy sexual activity that do exist can be overcome with a little imagination, ingenuity and creativity - qualities to be found in abundance in older people.
Fortunately information, advice and support does exist to help older people become more confident about being sexual. Speak to your GP or phone 01382 818479 if you wish to access the support of NHS Tayside Sexual Health Services
