If you think you have to young to be interested in fitness and exercise think again!
Although getting plenty of rest and relaxation is important as we get older, we shouldn't just put our feet up and forget about being active altogether. We've all made the excuses - I am too tired, it costs too much, my knees ache, Lycra doesn't suit me - but it is really never too late to start doing a little bit more. Sometimes it is just about finding an activity that is right for you.
Statistics show that only 26 per cent of men and 19 per cent of women in Scotland aged 55 to 64 take the recommended 30 minutes' exercise a day. And for 65- to 74-year-olds the figures drop even lower to 14 per cent of men and 8 per cent of women.
These figures are quite alarming. As people are living longer their quality of life depends on being healthy and independent. By staying active the benefits will stay with you well into your later years.
And the benefits are impressive:
• Reduces risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes, obesity and stroke.
• Strengthens your bones muscles and joints.
• Maintains mobility and hence your independence.
• Improves balance and reduces the likelihood of falling and consequent hip fracture.
• Ensures you have a good appetite and helps maintain healthy weight.
• Maintains regular bowel movements.
• Improves insomnia and other sleep problems.
• Maintains mobility and minimises the discomfort for those with arthritis or Parkinson's disease.
• Helps you cope with feelings of stress.
There is also evidence to suggest that regular exercise increases the release of chemicals in the brain that can affect our mood and make us feel happier.
But before you go out and join a gym or buy a pair of running shoes check that it's safe with your GP. if it isn't then he or she will suggest something that is - whether that's walking, swimming, golf, tennis, Tai Chi or even weight training. There really is something to suit everyone.
