If you look in phone directories for plumbers, electricians and other tradesmen you'll find lots of names and some quite flashy ads. But out of all those names how do you know which ones are reliable?
To help make sure you do find the right person for the job, follow these guidelines:
- Ask neighbours, friends and family for recommendations.
- Get at least three quotes from similar businesses.
- Make sure that quotes state what work is to be carried out, the fully inclusive price and when the work will start and finish.
- Do not pay any money for work unless you are satisfied the work is of acceptable quality. Get a neighbour, friend or relative to look over the work.
During 2007 a new scheme will be introduced to make it even easier - the Angus Fair Trading Scheme. Find out who is a member by visiting www.angus.gov.uk or checking at your local library or Access office.

- Keep calm
