Fire has been one of the most important discoveries the human race has ever made. It gives us protection, warmth and enabled us to cook our food. However, fire is also unpredictable, destructive and if not treated with respect it can ruin our lives.
The vast majority of fires are accidental and occur because of carelessness or distraction. If the following safety points are adhered to then the chances of fire occurring in your house will be greatly reduced.
Cooking
- Never leave a chip pan unattended.
- Never fill the pan more than one third full and dry off the chips before cooking.
Electricity
- Remove plugs that are not being used at night.
- Do not join two pieces of flex together - use a longer piece.
- Look out for danger signs such as fuses blowing, lights flickering or brown scorch marks on plugs or sockets.
Bedroom
- Once the guarantee is out on your electric blanket have it serviced once a year.
- Never use a blanket which has scorch marks or exposed elements
- Always make sure your blanket has British Standard number BS3456 and BEAB on it.
Smoking and Fires
- Never smoke in bed or when tired
- Always make sure ashtrays are emptied and safe last thing at night
- Always use a fireguard with an open fire.
- Do not dry clothes near a fire or heater.
Smoke Alarms
- Fit smoke alarms to give you early warning of a fire
- Test the alarms once a week and change the battery once a year
- Shut doors at night to stop the smoke from spreading
Fire Plan
- Plan ahead - don't waiting for a fire to decide.
- Get out, stay out and call the fire brigade.
- Call 999 and remember the call is free.
