Home safety after dark

The long dark nights are here. Unfortunately they usually lead to an increase in domestic break-ins as the darkness provides more cover for criminal activity. Properties left in darkness in late afternoon or the early evenings can appear to be unoccupied - which can be very tempting to criminals.
That's why 'After Dark' was initiated. This is an annual campaign run by Tayside Police to raise public awareness and advise on simple security measures to help prevent householders from being a victim
So what can you do to reduce the opportunities for a thief?
- You can set timers on internal lights and radios to give the impression that your house is occupied.
Fit external security lights. If you already have them installed then check they are functioning properly. - Consider installing an intruder alarm and if you do have one remember to use it.
- Before you leave your home ensure that you have locked all doors, windows, sheds and the garage.
- Don't leave anything in view that could tempt the opportunist thief or assist them in committing crime. Drawing blinds or curtains can assist in this matter.
- Put away all garden tools and ladders, or secure them if they can't be stored.
- Mark all valuables with your postcode and house number and make a full list of your property.
Doing so can make it easier to return property to its rightful owner should a house be broken into. - Be a good neighbour. If you see anything or anyone acting suspiciously - or witness anything that gives you cause for concern - call the police immediately.
- Join a local Neighbourhood Watch. There are a large number of schemes in the Angus area - but it there isn't one near you then why not start one yourself?
