How many times has this happened to you - your sitting down to eat or watch your favourite television programme and the phone rings? But it's not someone you know, it's someone trying to sell you something?

And how many pieces of personally addressed junk mail arrive on your doorstep everyday?

You don't have to put up with it. There is something you can do to stop those annoying calls and reduce the amount of junk mail coming through your door:

Scams

Every day people throughout the UK open their post or answer their telephone to find they have unexpectedly won a draw, lottery or other exciting prize. It may be genuine but it is more likely to be a scam - especially if they ask for money up front. The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) publishes information on recent internet, postal and doorstep scams.

If you receive any such communications ignore them and contact Consumer Direct on 0845 04 05 06.
