It is paid on top of other social security benefits and may actually increase the amount of any means-tested benefits you currently receive.

When and How to Claim

Claim straight away - if you don't you may lose benefits.

You can get further advice and a claim pack by; phoning the Directgov Benefit Enquiry Line for FREE on 0800 882 200, or contacting your local Jobcentre Plus or Social Security office.

If you are helping someone with their application please take the time to discuss the questions with them and decide how best to explain their individual needs. Once the form is complete read or have them read it through to make sure the information is correct, then get them to sign it.

If they cannot sign the form, you can complete and sign it on their behalf.
