Montrose Basin Visitor Centre
Come along and see the spectacular sights on view at the centre.
"Montrose Basin - a bird haven in the heart of Angus"
With a range of different habitats from mud to salt marsh and from freshwater to seawater, Montrose Basin is home to a fascinating variety of wildlife. At the Scottish Wildlife Trust's visitor centre on the edge of the Basin, you can discover some of this amazing wildlife first hand all year round and support one of Scotland's leading conservation organisations.
See wildlife through telescopes, binoculars and live CCTV footage from the comfort of the visitor centre. Marvel at the sight of thousands of migratory birds as they stop off on their global journey. Enjoy panoramic views of spectacular sunsets across the Basin from our viewing gallery. Friendly staff and volunteers in the visitor centre are always on hand to give you a warm welcome. Take time to share their knowledge about the local wildlife and the diversity of habitats within the reserve.
Relax with a cup of tea or coffee and enjoy watching birds feasting on the rich supply of food from redshanks and beautiful eider ducks to pink-footed geese and sandmartins nesting in our purpose-built sand martin bank. There's also a popular children's activity centre for younger family members and an exciting events programme with activities for all running throughout the year for all ages. Remember to visit our shop for gifts and souvenirs.
There are several walks and bird hides to visit on the reserve. See the map by click this link: Montrose Basin Map.
Lurgies walk
Park at the Old Montrose Pier. This pier was used until 1780's and provides good views of the Basin. Look out for kingfishers, waders and passage migrants such as greenshanks. Other species you may see in the Lurgies include brown hare and roe deer.
Shelduck Hide
Park at the Old Mill Car Park. The shelduck hide is 1.2 miles (2km) away and you may see brown hare. Birds to spot include skylark, reed bunting, sedge warbler and grey partridge. Enjoy excellent views of shelduck and their ducklings in summer.
Wigeon Hide
Park at the Old Mill Car Park. The Wigeon hide is under a mile (1.5km) from the car park. During incoming/high tides you can really appreciate the number of wildfowl visiting the Basin, particularly in winter. A telescope is recommended.
